Despite its huge role in the American zeitgeist, “What!? You’ve never seen STAR WARS?” is something genre fans keep finding themselves saying. Less and less often, though, as time goes by and younger fans come along.

So what’s going to be the new incredulity? What will boggle fans’ minds when they meet someone who hasn’t viewed/read it?

Comments on FB have suggested Firefly, but I think only among hardcore fandom. It’s never going to come close to the cultural saturation of Star Wars.

The Dark Knight films might go this way, depending on whether and how they’re followed up by the studios.
